In April 2011, the Calgary International Airport (YYC) embarked on a $620 million Runway Development Program. A major highlight of the project is a new 14,000’ long and 200’ wide runway, the longest in Canada and second only to a runway at the Denver Airport in North America, The project also includes an aircraft parking apron, taxiways, a central deicing facility and other infrastructure improvements.

PCL and Dufferin Construction formed a joint venture and were awarded the project development contract in November 2010.

When the contract was awarded, an exact specification had not been made as to the types of dowel baskets and dowels required for the project. Dayton Superior was able to work with both contractor companies to develop a plan for the type and quantities of product solutions best suited for the project.

Dayton Superior worked with PCL and Dufferin to develop the best product solution strategies to meet the project’s dowel basket and dowel needs. Dayton Superior supplied epoxy coated dowels used loose and in baskets. Dayton Superior also supplied dowel baskets to the project.

Because Dayton Superior is the largest North American manufacturer of dowel baskets and dowels for the paving industry, the company has the capability to produce the product solutions in a compressed timeframe. In addition, the company, through the use of stateof-the-art demand management tools, was able to meet a challenging delivery schedule without issue.

“Dufferin Construction has built and maintained a lasting relationship with Dayton Superior over the years due to their quality products, best pricing, prompt service and knowledgeable personnel,” said Mark Hatton, purchasing manager for Dufferin Construction Company
